peru. la corosha gesha
Variety: gesha
Process: washed
Flavor impression: hibiscus, sangria acidity, iced gyokuro tea
Net weight: 150 grams
Resting: 30 days from roast
Best tasting: 35 to 90 days from roast
Ronal Carranza Montenegro is an award-winning coffee producer and he operates Finca Guardian Del Bosque which is located in Amazonas, Peru. Ronal was very kind and offered me some of his gesha samples last year. While most of them presented clean florality with citrus, peach notes as I could expect from a Peruvian gesha washed, there was a whole different beast named “La Corosha” lot that stood above the rest on the cupping table.
The first sip of La Corosha gives a strong impression of ruby red aroma and fruit tones. Its florality is reminiscent of hibiscus flowers, and the acidity is round and complex - imagine a jar of sangria with citrus fruits, apple wedges, red grapes but without winey flavors. A hint of green tea finish begins to stand out when cooled but has no bitterness or astringency as one can find in matcha. Instead, the sensation is more similar to iced gyokuro which is smooth and mouth-coating .
I highly recommend La Corosha if you are interested in some exceptional flavors of Peruvian gesha.
